The Lessons ‘o’ Life
Those of you who have been following the family saga over in Joy’s blog and in certain mailling lists know that the last 12 months or so have been….um…”interesting”, in that adrenaline-rush, Chinese curse kinda way. The three MommyWizards have been homeless now, in three or four different countries, for over a year; Communal Child, already a mother of three, pregnant again; Fiance-in-law had a mild heart attack, right after which said Communal Child started experiencing contractions; Joy and Lena survived riots in India, revolution in Kathmandu, and even adventures in root canals, only to be brought down by dysentery; I got laid off by a nonprofit due to funding losses (thanks, Shrub); and I finally gave up my other job to go on sabbatical, and join Joy and Lena as they recover from their respective illnesses, injuries, and mental shocks.
So the point of describing all this is to prep you for a bit of something I’ve got to share about my experiences with all this. Once upon a time, I wrote a short story, and one of the characters in it is asked about the best way to get more certainty and security in one’s life. He responds:
“Well, let me tell you something about security…there is no such thing.
“Nothing is more certain, than that.”
Kinda sums the year up in a nutshell, huh? The main things I’ve learned recently, after dashing through airports, and listening to airport drivers argue in more languages than I can speak, is the following:
- Eat when you’re hungry.
- Rest, when you’re tired.
- Spend a little time every day talking to your deity of choice, or Higher Power, or whatever.
That’s really about it. Your mileage may vary. I know there’s those other Ten commandments, and so on, but the fact is I find them a lot more difficult to follow when I don’t do these other things.

I’m glad to hear you made it, at least to the same continent, as the wives. May the backpack not be too heavy, the laptop batteries last a long time and the food not made you run to the bathroom.
:)
Keep up the blogging, k?
